Visit to Stanton Drew Neolithic Circles

July 21, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

We had planned to follow Ian Blake’s talk on Brean Down with a visit to the Down which Ian had kindly agreed to lead. However, Ian reports that the National Trust has not yet decided on a date for the re-opening to the public of Brean Down Fort. We have therefore decided to postpone arranging a visit to Brean Down until there is a firm opening date.

As an alternative, we have organised a visit to Stanton Drew Neolithic Circles, to be led by David Roberts. The site is essentially a large field and so social distancing would not be a problem. The visit is planned to start on site at 2pm. A provisional booking for lunch at the adjacent Druid’s Arms (BS39 4EW) has been made for 12.30pm.  The pub will require confirmation or cancellation by the end of the previous week.

At the time of writing, the COVID situation and consequent guidance / requirements from HMG are uncertain. However, we do need an indication (no firm commitment at this stage) of the numbers likely to join the visit. If you are interested, please email roberts.dandm@gmail.com to let him know how many places you would require and if you would want to join a lunch party.

Stanton Drew is one of the most important Neolithic sites in England, comprising a large circle, two smaller ones and a “cove.” The landowner charges £1 via an honesty box. Please be aware that parking on site is very limited, but those lunching at the pub may leave their vehicles in the pub car park free of charge.

It would help planning if you were to reply to David by July 9.
