Visit to Banwell caves

July 9, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

There are two caves in the grounds which are unique and of national significance.  The Bone Caves contains bones of animals that are no longer native to this country and are up to 8,000 years old.    There are many theories why so many animal bones should be found in one place.  It is now accepted that the bones were washed into the cave in the Ice Age about 8,000 years ago.  There are various follies in the grounds, the most prominent being the tower which stand 50ft tall on the highest point of Banwell Hill.

Visit the Bone Cave with it’s Ice Age bones, take a walk through the woods, see the 19th. century follies and ascend Banwell Tower.

Meet at 2pm at ‘The Caves’ (an early 19th century house) on the West end of Banwell Hill. Take Well Lane off the A371 at Knightcott, follow the lane to ‘The Caves’ at the top of the hill. BS29 6NA  NGR 382588
