Tour of the Deanery Gardens in Wells
July 11, 2018 @ 6:00 pm
The visit will be led by Frances Neale
There has been a garden behind 9 Cathedral Green for about 850 years. In 2003 a team of volunteers undertook to clear the then neglected garden and restore the herb garden which had been laid out by Dean William Turner, well known botanist and author of “A New Herball” Although his planting schemes are not laid down they have created a Tudor-style garden with typical C16th plants
Frances had been actively involved with the restoration of the garden and is very knowledgeable about the plants and the history behind the garden.
Information about the project can be found on their website
Please wear suitable clothing and footwear in case of inclement weather.
To book a place on the visit please contact the secretary, Elizabeth Friend; Tel 01934 712971, or email friend.elizabeth@gmail.com
Please meet on the pavement outside the ‘No. 9’ door in the battlemented wall west of the Old Deanery – not in the Old Deanery Courtyard. There is no parking in the Old Deanery Courtyard. Cathedral Green itself should have spaces by early evening, or use the other central car parks. Sylvia Hanks (who actually set the whole project off in 2003) and Frances will be talking about the history of the place and the project, before you walk around, and they will also talk about the plants as you wander about: so a talk and a visit.
