Curiosity over an unusual note jotted on the back of an order in Wedmore parish records revealed a very unexpected story, and set off a remarkable trail through local and national archives.

What was the son of a Wedmore farmer doing in Gibraltar in 1789? Why was he on the coach from London to Bath, signed off like a parcel at each stage? And what happened to him back home?
